After completing this assignment, I definitely believe this technology relates to my future classroom. Using this technology would allow me to ensure that students have knowledge of and are able to apply the 21st century skill of technological literacy. Today’s students have an affinity for technology, so allowing them to create voicethreads and wikipages would certainly be a more relevant and authentic way to allow them to publish their writings rather than simply writing/typing a paper and turning it in. This technology is also beneficial because it appeals to multiple learning styles; being able to share a story both visually and orally would surely aid in students’ retention of the material. Additionally, the voicethread technology allows students to experience an added level of creativity by drawing illustrations for their writings. Nearly all students enjoy drawing/coloring, so offering them the opportunity to add pictures to accompany their writing would likely increase their motivation and enjoyment of this assignment. This technology would also be beneficial for the wide range of learners present in my future classroom. Using the voicethread technology would allow ESL students and students with speech impediments to practice their language/speaking skills without the feeling of scrutiny that often accompanies spontaneously speaking aloud. This technology is also useful because it allows the author of the writing to better enjoy the experience of publishing their work. Often students are so nervous about having to read aloud their work that they aren’t able to see the benefits of being lauded for their hard work and accomplishments. The ability to record their story ahead of time through voice thread eliminates the bad stigma that tends to surround being “recognized” by classmates and teachers, and the author himself/herself is better able to pinpoint areas of their diction where they need improvement by listening to their voicethread and that of others. Furthermore, this technology encourages collaboration amongst students, teachers, and families, which is a critical element of successful classrooms. This technology will enable students to work with one another by being “guest speakers” on one another’s voicethreads and share their finished products with one another on the wikipage. This technology would also encourage parents to get involved with their child’s learning by also serving as “guest speakers” on their child’s voicethread. The wikipage also allows students to showcase their work and technological skills for their loved ones no matter where they reside. Overall, I really enjoyed using the voicethread and wikipage technology. It was an easy, yet progressive way to update the publishing step of the writing process that I definitely feel would appeal to and be appropriate for all students. It was a memorable and worthwhile experience that I will certainly use in my future classroom.
